Royals Add American Alvarez to Rotation
GUELPH - The Guelph Royals Baseball Club is excited to announce today the signing of starting pitcher Arturo Alvarez.
Alvarez, 25, joins the Royals after spending the spring at the Ottawa Titans training camp.
Prior to beginning his professional career in Ottawa, the Inglewood, California native enjoyed a successful five-year career in college, beginning at Los Angeles Harbour College and ending at Western Oregon.
It was at Western Oregon where Alvarez, nicknamed "Turtle," caught the attention of professional teams.
At Western Oregon in his fifth year, the righty went 7-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 11 starts while showing off a pro-level cutter.
Royals assistant general manager Ryan Eakin said Alvarez is a big addition to the Royals.
"We needed a starting arm who could eat innings for us early on, and Alvarez will do just that. He comes highly recommended by the Titans, whom we thank for sending him to us. By all accounts, he is a great guy, hungry to get better every day, and has a ton of upside.
"It is going to be on us to help him develop and reach the next level. Until then, we are pumped to have him here and look forward to seeing what he can do."
We are also excited to announce the signing of outfielder Alex Camilo.
Camilo, a Guelph Silvercreeks graduate, is wrapping up his college career at Holy Family and will provide speed, defence, and outfield depth off the bench for the Royals this summer.
