Royals Add Ex-Big Leaguer Alvarez

by Ryan Eakin

GUELPH - The Guelph Royals Baseball Club is excited to announce today that we have signed pitcher Dario Alvarez for the 2023 season.

Alvarez, 34, officially joins the Royals for the upcoming season after visa issues stopped him from joining the team last season.

The Southpaw joins the Royals after an extensive professional career that saw him appear in a combined 56 MLB games with the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, and Texas Rangers respectively.

In those 56 games, the native of Santiago, Dominican Republic went 6-1 with 61 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched.

The 6'1", 170 left-hander has extensive minor league experience as well, having appeared in 211 minor league games dating back to the 2007 season.

Of those 211 games, 92 of them came in AAA.

Alvarez, who most recently pitched in Mexico, has international experience too, having won a Bronze Medal with the Dominican Republic in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Royals field manager Dino Roumel says he expects Alvarez to instantly become one of the better pitchers in the league.

"We are excited to welcome Dario to our ball club. Dario is someone that we have targeted for three years. This former Major League and Olympian will add not only experience, but a great work ethic. Alvarez was selected as the top reliever in the Dominican Winter League, having not allowed a run all season. Welcome to the Royal City, Dario."
