Royals Add Ochoa, Bring Back Newman on Deadline Day
GUELPH - The Guelph Royals Baseball Club is excited to announce today the signings of infielder/pitcher Nathan Ochoa and reliever Owen Newman.
Ochoa, 22, signs with the Royals after a three-year minor league stint in the Washington Nationals organization.
From 2022 to 2025, the former sixth round pick of the Nationals batted a lifetime .211 with five home runs, 20 doubles, and four triples.
Ochoa, who was on Canada's 2025 Men's Team Roster alongside teammate Jake Sanford, will also pitch for the Royals.
Newman, 20, signs with the Royals after spending his 2025 season with the team.
Committed to Waterloo University, Newman provides depth to the Royals bullpen.
Royals assistant general manager Ryan Eakin said he thinks it was a successful deadline for the team.
"Coming into the deadline, our top goal was to add someone who can play the left side of the infield and Ochoa was atop of our list. We are thrilled to add someone with Ochoa's skillset, resume, and hunger. The fact he is converting into a two-way player made us that more intrigued.
"As for Newman, you can never have enough pitching. He gives us an extra layer of depth and is someone that we all love in the clubhouse."
