Royals Announce Ownership Group

GUELPH - The Guelph Royals begin a new era today, building on over 100 years of baseball in the Royal City. A new ownership group was approved by the new Canadian Baseball League (CBL) yesterday, officially bringing new energy and vision for baseball in Guelph. 

The Royals are part of the growing CBL, formerly the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL). Whereas the IBL was considered “semi-pro”, the CBL is a fully professional independent baseball league that is home to Canada’s best baseball. There are nine teams in the league.

“Like Guelph, baseball is very much on the rise,” said owner Shawn Fuller. “This new group understands the incredible opportunity to bring people and families together to share in live sport and entertainment experiences right here in the community.” 

The new ownership group for the Royals includes people with extensive experience in baseball, business, marketing, economic development, community engagement, media, and sport management. It consists of eight people from Guelph, Mississauga, North York, Milton and Ottawa, all joining previous majority owner Shawn Fuller, who remains a shareholder. The team was established in 1919 and quickly established itself by winning the league championship in its first three years of existence. They have gone on to win nine championships in total. 

Recently they have been climbing up the league standings with the intention of launching a strong playoff run later this summer. Home games are played twice each week on Saturdays and Tuesdays at David E. Hastings Stadium at Exhibition Park.
