Royals Can't Contain Panthers Bats in Blowout Defeat

by Ryan Eakin

KITCHENER - Slumping.

The Kitchener Panthers continued their torrid pace to begin their 2023 season, beating the Guelph Royals 13-3 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 4-1 on the season.

With the loss, the Royals drop to 1-4.

Kitchener starter Christan Hauck took a no-decision after allowing two earned runs on nine hits and one walk in four and two-thirds innings pitched.

The IBL veteran struck out five Guelph batters.

Panthers reliever Adam Roberston picked up the win after tossing one and one-third scoring innings in relief.

Kitchener third basemen Elliot Curtis continued his dominant start to his season, going three-for-five with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Guelph starter Sandy Baez took the loss in his first IBL start, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two walks in four innings pitched.

GUELPH - 3-11-1

KITCHENER - 13-16-2

BIGGEST PLAY OF THE GAME: Just three batters into the ball game, Panthers star shortstop Raul Gonzalez hit a two-run, no-doubt home run to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead.

BY THE NUMBERS...

3. A three-hit game for Royals outfielder J.D Williams, who continues to be Guelph's shining bat through the early portion of the season.

4. A four-game losing streak for the Royals after their season-opening win against the Hamilton Cardinals.

LOOKING AHEAD...

The Royals look to snap their losing streak when they return home on Tuesday to face the winless Brantford Red Sox. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:30.
